Oh it feels so good to be getting back into the projects! For the last month I have not touched a piece of fabric or had any design projects to complete! Even though this one is not for me, it still felt good to be creative again!
This message board is for my client with THIS office and THIS master bedroom. We are slowly making it though her adorable 4 bedroom bungalow. The last focus as been the office. I need to take some pictures of the finished room... just need a few extra hours in my day!
My client already had this 24" x 24" magnetic message board from Pottery Barn and wanted to incorporate it into the office design. I thought the room needed a little bit of softening with some fabric so we came up with covering the message board in fabric. She loved the one I speced for window treatments so we went with that.
The message board was 24" square but I needed about 1 1/2" to wrap to the back on all sides. So my cut fabric was about 27"-28" square.
Since I didn't want to damage the message board, and in the event my client might want to change her mind on the fabric I decided to go with velcro adhesive to attach the fabric to the back.
Starting at the top I measured out {leaving about 3" or so room for the corner} one of the velcro stripes and attached it to the board.
Next I measured out the other side and placed it on top of the other velcro stripe. I pressed down to secure and then removed the sticky backing. Then I folded the fabric over pressing to grab on to the sticky velcro strip. Repeat on the opposite side, pulling the fabric taught from the center and working your way out.
Move to the sides of the message board. To secure the corners pull back a little of the fabric on the side that is already attached with velcro.
Pull the fabric down at an angle on the corner...
Fold the fabric from the side that already has velcro back over...
Secure with a strip of velcro. Repeat on other side and continue the strip of velcro to that side.
Repeat with the second strip of velcro and fold fabric over securing to the sticky side of the second velcro strip. Trim the excess velcro off on the corners. Repeat on the other side, pulling the fabric taught from the center out.
Because this board already had a way to hang it I didn't want to cover them up. So I trimmed the velcro to leave that spot open. Then I trimmed the fabric after it was attached to the velcro, that way the fabric would not fry because it had the velcro backing.
I picked up these fun magnets from wally world and sprayed them to match the filing cabinets I painted for her a few weeks ago. It is all in the detials! I love that they look like push pins on fabric, but they are really magnets!
Now that the creative juices are flowing again, I have a list started for the new house!
Projects here I come!

On a totally different note, I would be remiss if I didn't mention 9.11.
As a daughter of a Retired Fire Captain, a daughter-in-law of an active Fire Captain, a wife of an active Fire Captain, and a sister-in-law to 2 active Fire Fighters {yes it runs in the family} I can not let this day go without mention and honor the lives of the 343 fire fighters and the 72 police officers that sacrificed their lives to save others. I always remember thinking when I was watching the tragedy on TV: Everyone was running out as they were running in!!
Thank you Heroes!

What a great idea. I will put this post in a special spot if I need to refer to it.
MC and I have learned that:
VELCO IS OUR FRIEND!
This is a great DIY, and you had me wondering where the cork was for the push pins! Love the fabric, too!
Love that fabric! BIg shout out to your family of fire fighters and remembering those of 9.11
Awesome! I love the fabric. I used the grey colorway for the bench seat in my entry!
Such a clever idea! I never would have thought to cover a magnetic board with fabric :)
So cute! I love the fabric you chose!
