For the last 5 years my parents have been staying with me in every house I have owned, or rented. It was not easy at first {my mom and I are VERY SIMILAR} but we defiantly found our groove of 4 adults living under the same roof for an extended period of time.
This year was my parents first summer in their own house, their own space, and their own time with the grandkids. I really think they enjoyed themselves here over the summer. But not just having the kids around. They really enjoying putting their house together. Over the summer I have been giving updates on all of my mom and dad's projects around the house so I thought I would do a round up of some of the bigger transformations that took place in this house.
The Living Room
The biggest transformation was the reconfiguration of the fireplace and media niche. {see progress pics here} This house was built in '98 so there was not many flat screen tvs back then. Even still the niche was so small, off centered and totally useless. My mom is a big on symmetry and really could not stand the fireplace being off centered. So I designed a centered fireplace with a tv above and storage cabinets on the side. My dad did all of the construction, venting, tiling, and finish work for the whole thing! This give my mom EVERYTHING she wanted and totally updated the look of this room!!
My mom purchased almost everything from Craigslist or from thrift stores. As I look at the bottom picture the only thing that is new is the picture on the back wall!! After the fireplace was complete my dad turned his attention the upholstery. In total he full upholstered 6 chairs in the house and 2 seat cushions. The couch, coffee table, and rug all purchased from Craigslist!!!
Another feature in the living room is the fountain niche my dad created {see how here}. An outdoor fountain, paired with an antique bowl gave my mom the water feature she was looking for.
Master Bedroom
The master bedroom was a place my mom wanted to be able to come and read a book or watch tv. She wanted it to be soothing and fresh. The fabric was a great find at only $6 a yard! We loved it so much we used all over the room. My dad made the headboard panels, and my mom added the trim to the bottom of the bed shirt and made the custom bolster. {see how to make the headboard here}
Again, these chairs were another Craigslist find. She picked these up for $30!!! They looked less then good, but had great bones and the cushion was still great! We think they used to be hotel room chairs, because as my dad took them apart he found a dozen pens in the cushions.
Guest/Boys Bedroom/Playroom
If you followed my One Room Challenge, you saw me and my mom make this small guest bedroom into a multi functioning guest/boy/playroom. She wanted to make the boys feel like this was their room with two separate twin beds and provide enough floor space to let them play. The beds are trundle beds set up like two twins. Then when my mom has adult guests she pushes the bed together to make a king {see how here}. Everyone that stayed in this room was very comfortable! It could not have worked out better!
So there you have it! There was so many more small ones, spray painting and chalk painting here and there, an amazing outdoor table {that I still need to take pictures of and share}, and some great thrift/estate sales transformation. But in one summer my parents transformed this house to be an amazing space! Now I get to live in it for the next 2 months!

I love the transformation! The before and after pictures really tell the story of how much work was completed. You and your mom made some amazing finds and your dad is a talent craftsman. Can he move to my neighbohood? I think the biggest improvement is the fireplace. It looks so much better centered on the wall. Hope you and your family make many happy new memories in their new home.
You added so much value to this house by changing the fireplace! Great plan using mirrors on the backs of the shelves. I love the fabric on the chairs in master bedroom. So pretty!
Great job on the fireplace! It looks so much better repositioned and symmetrical on that wall! Lots of work...paid off. The house looks great!
WOW....MC DOESN'T DO UPHOLSTERY!! YOUR PARENTS ARE AMAZING AND THEIR HOME IS GORGEOUS!
Awesome transformations. I'm blown away by all the chairs, and in awe of your Dad's skills :-) Their home doesn't resemble the house they bought one bit! Thanks for sharing, Tiffany...
Nice job in all the rooms...both you and your Mom, and even your Dad, have great taste. I hope they enjoy their new space
