Outdoor Extravaganza... Planting

As I may have said one or twice on this blog... I rent my house.  So needless to say I do not have the yard of my dreams.  I do not have room to plant an amazing garden of vegetable, herbs, and flowers to cut.  It is a decent size... but that is about all it is.

So for the last couple of years I have gone with out and relied on my home owner friends to share their bounty... which they so do {love you all}.  After much though on what I should do for this project I thought why not have a container garden.

I did a round of up all of the lose pots on the side of my house and decided they would make a great garden.  I wanted to have a mixture of things I could use in the house; tomatoes, herbs, peppers, and cutting flowers.

The bad blogger I am... I only have this picture from last years post on my herbs.

After we arranged the pots it was planting time...

J was our little helper!  He was so excited to shovel the dirt into the pots and get his hand dirty!

I kept all the herbs to their own pot.  I did a dry layout before I planted them.

We chose 2 kinds of heirloom tomatoes and two Better Boy tomatoes.  One of them is called Mortgage Lifter... funny foreshadowing?  Once planted we gave them a little tomato food to drink.

I can not wait until I have a huge garden bed full of blooms I can cut, but until then I will settle for what I can get.  I planted Dalihas, Lilies, and snap dragons.  Even if I just cut a few stems for the house they will be so worth it!

So it doesn't matter where you live... if you are limited on space or just can't plant anything in the ground, containers are the way to go!

Don't forget to see all of the other projects by the other fabulous ladies!

Love it! I'm so glad you were inspired to plant something even though you are just renting. It looks like everyone had fun and I'm sure your kids will love tending to the pots. My son used to pick out his own plants at the garden center and took a particular interest in those throughout the summer!

Love the brightly coloured pots and your selection of herbs! We're trying raised garden beds this year and hoping to get some plants in the ground this weekend!

I'm renting, too! So container gardening is by far the best option for me. Anything we do in the yard has to be with little to no out-of-pocket expense... I really like what you did - your containers look so cheerful, and I love the way they pop against the rock :-)

Love it, Tiffany! I can't wait to hear how your tomatoes do. I normally just grow basil and some pineapple sage (which, btw, grows huge and gorgeous by fall, usually!), but this year I got brave and planted lettuce in my containers. I considered tomatoes, but I was afraid I'd mess them up. ;)

There is, however, nothing more awesome than cooking a meal and just wandering out to your little garden and picking fresh herbs for it - did it last night!

Hopefully, I can get some pictures of my own little container garden this weekend and share, too.

I really like how this turned out. I tried a small herb garden in the ground before and it failed miserably! A container garden is a great idea. :) Have you grown tomatoes before? Is it hard to care for them?

Your garden look beautiful. And what's great is you can take it with you when you go! :) I'll live vicariously thru your herb garden as mine...didn't turn out so well.
