I have said before, I get my design eye from my mom and I get my analytical DIY sense from my dad. This post should be titled "where I get it from!"
Ever since my parents have moved into their house, this niche has been bothering my mom. Well not the niche itself, but rather what to put in it. Then one morning it hit her... she wanted a fountain.
She began her hunt at her favorite store, Craig's List, but had no luck. Finally my parents found a fountain at Lowes, but it was made for outside. No problem my dad says, he will convert it. The base that came with it would not work, so my mom and I picked up a beautiful blue and white bowl at an antique store that fit perfectly .
For the fountain to work he needed to have electricity and a water source large enough to fill the pot. So inside the hall closet door he cut a access panel...
Drilled a hole in the new bowl and fitted it with a sink drain attachment.
The pipe then runs under the niche to his water source... a 5 gallon bucket full of water. He then added an outlet to power it.
Once water is pulled up it recirculates from the pump in the vase.
He also wired the light and the fountain to turn on at the same time via the existing switch for the light above. But my mom thought what if I want to have the fountain on, but the light off? So my dad wired the light to be a two way and installed a switch in the closet to turn the light off!! Yes he can pretty much do anything!
The fountain makes the perfect amount of water noise and does not splash at all! Their house is coming together. Currently the fireplace has been moved, but my dad is waiting on a pipe to complete the venting and close up the wall. So while he waits he has moved onto reupholstering the 6... yes 6 chairs my mom has found on CL for the living room and her bedroom. And, no... he never stops {where do you think I get that from?} We have selected a paint finish for the living room and bought paint for the master bedroom. We should have some great pics soon!

He is one handy man to have around!! It looks great. And I love the paint samples on the wall too. :)
I love this!! I have always had a love of water and fountains. Tried to have one at my wedding, but that is a different story! I'm the opposite of you, I get my artistic side from my dad and my analytical side from my mom. :)
I love the fountain! Such a calming and welcoming element to the home! I am sure it is so rewarding to see things slowly come together!
I love your dad!! The fountain is a brilliant idea and I love the soothing sound of water. So awesome that he was willing to rig it up. And upholstering the chairs too? Gosh - you definitely got your skills from somewhere! :)
