Mid Century Modern Makeover

It is finally reveal time!  Did I keep you waiting long enough?  I am so very, very please with the finished product!  

I turned the dresser into a media credenza.  I knew that my 5 year old Ikea cabinet was on its way out, but I thought I would wait till we were in our new house to start searching.  Until I stumbled on this MCM dresser at a thrift store last week.  

We keep a lot of stuff in our TV cabinet.  It holds all of our DVD's {that we never watch} our computer printer, all the internet stuff, and a few random other things.  I wanted to be able to keep the printer there so a small structural makeover was necessary.

The hubs was very excited about this cabinet {though he wasn't so excited when I said I wanted to buy it} but when I told him my plans to make it over he jumped right on board.  After measuring all of our media components we determined that we would need one big open space for all of them to fit.  I am not typically a fan of seeing my cable box, but there was really no other way.  So we decided to remove the entire drawer bank on top.  With a reciprocating saw he removed the two stile supports.

Then to make room for our printer he made the two large center drawers one large opening.  He used 1/4 birch ply wood to make a floor.  I didn't want to lose the look of the drawers in the front so he took the two drawer fronts and faced them on another piece of ply wood.  He then attached hinges and chain so the fake drawers fold down.

Since he had pretty much removed all of the important structural pieces, he used some of the scrap wood that he removed to add additional supports.  In our new house the tv will be mounted on the wall, but until then it has to support our very heavy tv.  

To make the top component shelf, he used 1/4 birch ply wood and attached it to the frame.  Then I sanded the whole piece down with my electric sander.  The wood was so dry I did not have to take hardly any of the remaining finish off.  I think it probably just had a clear coat of poly on it.  We choose a walnut stain.  I wanted it to match the moulded wood from my Eames chair.  I have never stained anything before.  I am more of the paint it girl.  But the stain was super easy to apply.  Brush on with foam brush, wait 5 minutes, then remove with a cloth.  Apply 2 coats of poly.  We bought the fast drying formula for both... because we all know how I am not a patience person!

All the components fit well and the printer and drop down door are perfect!

There were a few scratches on the top that I couldn't sand out, but they are so small you would have to look really hard to find them.

After I cleaned the hardware with soap and water, I used some Rub and Buff to give the hardware a new bright finish.  I love how it pops off of the dark brown.

I could not be happier with the way it looks in the space.  Every time I look at it I feel like I have graduated from Ikea, and now I have grown up furniture!
