When I envisioned what I wanted my bedroom to look like for The One Room Challenge, I knew I wanted to keep with the tropical theme, but I wanted it to still be slightly modern. I have always loved the texture of bamboo and have used it in my house for a long time. After looking at couple of sunburst mirrors on Pinterest I decided that I wanted to make one out of bamboo. Modern meets tropical!
Like most of my DIY projects I really don't have a plan before I begin. Just a have an overall finished vision and vague idea of how I am going to do it!
Materials needed:
Bamboo
{again I wish I could tell you how much I used, but I bought my here and think 3 bunches would do}
5" mirror
5" needlepoint loop
Cardboard cut to 5" or 5" wood disk
{upon second thought, I used both}
Miter box
Hand saw
Spray Paint in color of choice
Hot glue gun and sticks
Saw tooth hanger
I first started out by laying out a pattern I thought I would like. I sort of wanted the pattern to be long, then medium, then short and back to medium.
Once the pattern was laid out I cut all of the exposed ends to a 45 degree angle. I then measured and cut to the right size.
This is what it looked like. And I didn't like it! I wanted it to be more bulky and have more rays. At this point it was late and I was tired!
So the next morning with a clear head and a cup of coffee I laid out a new design on my kitchen table.
Instead of staggering the bamboo sticks I found I got more rays if I lined them up on the very edge of the cardboard disk. I taped off a cross to better guide my center points. Then I followed the pattern I originally wanted; long, medium, short, medium, long. That pattern made 1/8 of the circle. Typically I would cut all of my pieces and then glue them all down, but the bamboo was rolling all over the place, so I cut then glued one by one.
Next I sprayed the first color on the bottom. I wanted there to be a little extra depth to the sunburst so I sprayed the bottom layer a matte gold and the top layer a bright gold.
For the second layer I used all of the left over pieces from my nightstands. I didn't really have a pattern in mind, but I wanted them to sort of be weaved into the bottom layer. Nothing longer than the stick it was next to. I attached the top layer to the needlepoint loop with hot glue. **Note: I was just at hobby lobby {of course after I was finished with this project} and saw wood glue hot glue sticks!! How great is that! They also had sticks for fabric glue!!**
Then I sprayed the top layer in my shiny gold.
Originally I was just going to use the cardboard to as my base, but as I added the second layer I thought it needed a little bit more support. So I found this 5" round disk at the craft store and hammered the saw tooth hanger on the back. I used hot glue to glue it to the cardboard before I added the second layer of bamboo. I also used hot glue to attach the top layer to the bottom.

Thanks for the tutorial on this. I've been wanting to make a sunburst for awhile now, and I'm going to tuck your method away; it seems to have a bit more of a sturdier backing than others I've seen. Love the bamboo and the gold combo!
This is probably my favorite diy version that I've seen! Love the look with the bamboo.
This came out fabulous!
Pretty!

I LOVE these! One of these days I'm going to sit down and make one. Yours turned out awesome with the bamboo. That's something I never thought about using for it.
Thanks for sharing! :)
It's a beautiful mirror and such a unique design. I love your idea for hanging it too. I have a charger that I've been wanting to hang on the wall but had no idea how to. I may steal your hanging design. :)
LOVE this. Featuring you tonight at Meet Me Monday. Starts at 4pm and would love to see you again this week. Thank you so much for taking the time to share! Love, Me www.youaretalkingtoomuch.com
