One Room Challenge... Week 1

A few weeks ago, Linda from My Crafty Home-Life contacted me with a challenge to transform one room {mine or clients} in 6 weeks start to finish.  I said yes right away... any excuse to redo a room in my house, but I had a hard time trying to decided what room I wanted to do.

If you have been paying attention, I have posted only about my downstairs.  I have not ventured to my upstairs at all.  Why do you ask?  Well since I rent, and since I knew we would be moving soon {this will be our new house} and since it is a two story and most guest don't upstairs I have not put much thought into the bedrooms.  I know that when we move {it is a single story house} M will be moving into a big boy bed and J wants to change things, so why not wait to spend the money then?... when everyone will see it!!

So with that in mind, I was having a hard time deciding if I would move my blog posts upstairs... but then I thought why not do a room with the thought that it could move right into the new house.  All of the rooms are about the same size, and I have been visualizing my color schemes and design for the new house for awhile now... so why not just take the plunge?  I decided I would complete our Master Bedroom with the intent it would move seamlessly into the new house.

Our master bedroom is nice as it is, but we are in need of some decent bedding, and new bed all together, and a little more color and design direction.  Currently it has a tropical, hawaiian vibe.  The hubs and I got married in Hawaii so it is a place that is close to us.  Here are my plans for the space:

I made that headboard right before J was born in my crazy nesting phase.  Before I knew how to sew my mom did all of my sewing for me and she made me those pillows in the bright tropical fabric and I still love the fabric.  My mom and I found those night stands at Home Goods for $75 each and they fit perfectly with the antique dresser I already had in the room {see pic below}.
I would like to add some more pillows; embellish the existing bedskirt; paint out my existing night stands and maybe embellish them a little, transform my existing headboard; and add some interesting art or mirrors above the bed and nightstands.  I would also like to get new table lamps.

This chair is part of a pair {the other is in my guest bedroom} and they used to be my Grandmothers.  My mom made this slipcover when she thought she would be taking these chairs to Hawaii with her.  But when me and the hubs moved to San Francisco we needed small furniture so she let me "borrow" them.  Luckily my parents decided not to take anything to Hawaii, so I got to keep them. I love the lines of these chairs!  The posters I found at Walmart in Kona {the same style are over the bed} and dressed them up in bamboo frames.
I would like to reupholster the chair {I will do both because both will have a home in my NEW master bedroom}; change out the art for something different or maybe a DIY art piece, and change out the side table.

This is the antique dresser I was gifted from my mom {yes I swear I actually bought some of my furniture in my house... but I was very lucky to get A LOT of good stuff from my mom}!  She also made the runner.    And yes, my TV is VERY old, but it still works and we only watch it for the intro of my TiVOed Chelsea Lately's before we fall asleep {what, too much information?} so it works for us!
I am not sure what I am going to do with the dresser... paint it or leave it alone?  I am not going to change the TV now, because I think we will have a mounted flat screen in our NEW house.  So I am not sure what to do with this area now.  What do you think?

Here is where I would like to go with the room:

When I found my Mocha Chiang Mai Dragon pillows on Ebay I also found it in the aquamarine colorway!  I scored 2.3 yards of fabric for... wait for it.... $130!!!  When a yard of this fabric retails for $230... it was a deal I couldn't pass up.  Again a thank you to my mom for gifting it to me!  I think it will go perfect with my existing tropical floral!  I also want to add some greens and blues in the fabric and furniture.
This will be A LOT of DIY, repurposing and rethinking what I have!  I am very excited to get going... just waiting for my No Spend Challenge month to be done so I can get to buying the other things I need.  Luckily I agreed to participate in December and was able to source a lot of this fabric before I couldn't spend anything... so maybe I won't be too far behind!  It is going to be a lot of work and a huge challenge to get it all done in 6 weeks... but I am totally up for it!

Good thing I am not in on this alone!  14 other amazing bloggers are taking the challenge with me.  We will post about it once a week for the next six weeks!  Be sure to check out their rooms too!

And speaking of my No Spend Challenge... Check out my latest No Spend Project today over at

Great colour and plan Tiffany! Love that you are repurposing to mix things up. That dresser is amazing, and looks good as is or would also look fabulous in one of the blues from your design board. Looking forward to seeing the transformation!

Great find on the chiang mai dragon fabric! I think the addition of pillows and embellishing the headboard (nailhead trim?) will make a big difference. I say paint the dresser!

You have a great project planned, Tiffany! I think you could paint the dresser to lessen the brown in that corner of the room (with the mirror frame and plant pot). And then I am also reading a lot of Hawaii, Hawaii, Hawaii....on my list of places to visit someday!

I'm going to love your room...the inspiration board is fantastic!! I have a sunburst mirror over the bed in my guestroom and I wasn't sure I was going to like it, and it's my favorite thing!!

Hi Tiffany!
I love your hawaiian vibe! It makes me want to lie on a beach somewhere with a coconut drink in tow ;)
But I am especially excited to see what you come up with in the next 6 weeks! I'm sure it'll be fabulous!
