No Spend Challenge

On Friday I announced my goal to not spend a single penny on home decor for the month of January.

Here is my first no spend project:

It is no secret I love my wine, which means I have a lot of corks!  And I love the natural texture of wine corks and the color the red wine leaves on the ends {see my cork wreath}.  I had planned on doing a M, but as I started looking around my house I realized I have a lot of Ms!  I was staring at the keyboard thinking of another letter I could do and the ampersand just jumped out at me.  I have always loved the look of an ampersand; all curvy and fun! I made this from cork, cardboard, and glue.

First I used photoshop to create and print out a large ampersand.  I enlarged the image and then cut and pasted 4 sections in a new window to print on regular sized paper.  As you can see this was not very successful!  But it gave me a good guide to free hand the shape on the cardboard.

Once the shape was cut out it looked way off and it was! After staring at the key on the keyboard, I made a few adjustments....

Next I glued the corks to the cardboard cut out with liquid nails.  I would have preferred a clear glue like E6000, but I was out of that!

I had pulled out this San Francisco art work that we have had since the hubs and I were dating with the intent to pull out the art and paint the frame.  But when I sat it up there I fell in love with the picture again!

Now it is your turn!
On Friday I light heartily threw out the same challenge to my readers to not spend anything on home decor {just for the month} and I was a little shocked to see so many people wanted to join in!  So I gave it some thought this weekend... and I am officially throwing out a challenge:

Here are the rules:
Create, scavenge, or repurpose items to refresh your home decor in the month of January.  These can be DIY projects, objects from nature, or {yes, I was asked} something you find in the dumpster as long it was FREE!!

I am challenging myself to not spend a single penny; even for tape and glue but I would say purchasing tools only {like tape, glue, and brushes but not things like paint} needed for the project would be fine but try to keep it under $5 per project.

At the end of the month I will have a link party for all of us to check out the great projects we all created that were FREE!!

Please add this button to any of the posts you do that fit within the challenge and invite all of your readers to join in!

I have a few more projects up my sleeve, and I can't wait to see what all of you will source out!  Hopefully in the end we will have great inspiration for many more projects... and they will be FREE!!

Tiffany!! I just love this. LOVE this. How nifty are you?? I've seen so many things using wine corks, but this is one of my favorites! Too bad I don't have ANY wine corks at my house haha.

I also love that you aren't spending anything on home decor this month. I've spent all but $15 of my monthly allowance already!

I love this! I need to start saving my wine corks already. Love the idea of doing something different than the simple monogram. Unfortunately, I already spent some money this month :( but I need to get on this train soon.

It looks really cute! Oh and a little tip for photoshop you can choose to print as tiles (with an overlap) so that you dont have to do 4 different windows.

It's modern, yet it adds an earthiness vibe with the cork. Very clever!
