I had seen this tray on Pinterest and I just fell in love! I am a sucker for any chevron, a sucker for things that are gold, and a sucker for trays... and this one has it all!!
I had to put my thinking cap on to figure out how to make this at no cost... and would you believe it is made with foil, spray paint, and Mod Podge!
I pulled out a long sheet of foil and marked off 1/2" strips. I then decided I wanted them a little bit bigger so I made them 1" strips.
Once they were all cut out with a straight line and roller cutter, I thumbtacked and nail the strips down to a piece of wood on both sides.
I sprayed the foil strips with my favorite gold spray paint, making sure I kept the can moving so the paint did not puddle up on the foil.
Next step was to apply the strips. I knew that I would Mod Podge the whole thing, but I wanted a little bit of a sticky surface to lay out the design.
I sort of just eyeballed out the pattern...
I wanted to make sure the foils strips would wrap around the sides of the tray so I left them long and then trimmed them after the top was sealed with Mod Podge.
To make the points look clean I used my roller cutter to trim the excess foil off. I also used it to cut the wrapped foil on the sides of the tray.
Next I applied two coat of Mod Podge in luster {because that is what I had on hand} and waited for it to dry.

This is too funny because I was about to buy that tray and then I thought I could make it a DIY project, and I just bought a silver big jack like yours that I was going to put on it. I like where your heads at :) This turned out fabulously, and I can't wait to get started on mine!
