How To: Upholstered Tufted Headboard con't

So yesterday I began my "How To" make an upholstered tufted headboard {see first post here}.  Today I will finish and tell you how to hang it with simple picture hangers.

To leave off from yesterday, after using a jig to measure out the buttons placement and drilling the holes it was time to upholster it.

The first step to making the "tufted" part was to make the matching button covers.  This is a simple kit that you can find at any fabric store.  Mine came with clear template to trace for the size needed for the fabric... but when I went back to buy some more, none of them came with the template...

Once all of the fabric was cut out I began to make the buttons.  Insert fabric in the given plastic mold.

Fold all of the fabric in and place the button back into the mold.

 Push down V  E  R  Y, V  E  R  Y hard!!

After the first 2 my thumbs were hurting... so the hubs looks into his endless tool box and pulls out a weight of some sort...

This made it SO much easier!!

Next was to add the batting to give it the tufted look.  I debated for a long while as to how much "tufted" I really wanted.  The room was whimsy but also modern so I didn't want to go overboard with the tuft.  So instead of foam I used two layers of medium quilting batting.

This headboard measured 48" x 48" and it took about 3.5 yards of fabric {I ordered 4}.  t|To start the tufting I began applying the buttons in the middle and working my way out.  I used a long upholstered needle to work the twine from the back of the headboard through the drilled holes and past the fabric.

Then I would thread the button on to the twine and fish the needle back through the hole.

I used my my husband's staple gun attached to my my husbands air compressor.  I am in love with this thing!!!  If you have one I HIGHLY recommend it, but if you don't you can use a regular staple gun.

Once all of the buttons are attached it is time to staple the edges.  Just like covering anything else, I started in the middle and made my way to the edges.  Once the fabric was all stapled I attached two 80lbs D rings to the back to mount the headboard on the wall.  I thought I had pictures of this, but I was too excited to get it up!  I placed them toward the top of the far corners.  Measure the distance down on both sides so it hangs level.

I, and my clients {mom and daughter} are so very happy with the way it turned out!

Great project! Do you have any suggestions for getting the fabric to lay smoothly around the curve?
