This weekend I was lucky enough to spend Saturday fabric shopping with my Mother in Law, and Sunday at a winery for Father's Day... seriously! What a great life I have!!
Anyways... my MIL is ready to tackle her formal living room. This room is the first thing you really see when you walk in the door and is a the main room they walk through from the master bedroom to the family room and kitchen. It has amazing ceiling height, newly installed crown molding and hardwood floors, and a great fireplace. It has south facing windows, but the outdoor patio has a patio cover {and they plan to build a pergola out from that} so the light will not be super bright. For this reason she would like to keep the fabrics and feel light and airy. My in-laws are not incredibly formal people so they would like it to be a space that is inviting {not old Grandma's formal living room where no one was ever allowed to sit}.
She has all of the pieces that will anchor the room, but some of them need a little updating. This couch is from her mom:
Scary.. I know! She also has a pair of arm chairs and a coffee table that we are going to make into a ottoman. We were on the search for fabric to reupholster the sofa {this will be done professionally}. My MIL is envisioning a linen like fabric in a neutral shade that will be timeless {unlike the current fabric}. Makes me wonder what they were thinking in the early '80's, and will we feel that way in 30 years about what we design now? That is a whole other post!
When we were looking for the sofa fabric we came began to build our fabric story. Here are the fabrics we found and fell in love with:
The floral is what we plan to use when we take her wood coffee table and make it into an ottoman. The fabric is so bright and airy {just wanted we were looking for}. The two coordinating fabrics {on the left} are from a huge stack of fabric samples that are just $3 each! My MIL design style is mostly traditional, but is also drawn to graphic patterns so this traditional chenille in a modern chevron {i heart chevron} is a great find. The fabric on top of that has a modern feel, but adds a little organic movement to the mix. I am thinking these will be used for pillows on the old but newly upholstered sofa and the pair of chairs. The other two fabrics on the right don't really have a home yet, but I am sure I will find a place for them. We both loved the pops of slate blue in the ottoman fabric and would like to bring that into the room also.
As I was taking these pictures I couldn't help but notice that my greek key fabric {that I used here, here, and here in my house} would be a perfect graphic blue pattern we were looking for.
Now off to search the internet for the perfect linen blend fabric for under $20 a yard!
